김용 현 다트머스대 총장이 오바마 대통령으로부터 세계은행 총재 후보로 임명되었다.
의사였고 교육자였던 김용 총장을 추천한 이유는
세계은행은 가난을 줄이고 삶의 질을 개선시켜야하는 영향력있는 기관이고, 김 총장이 빈곤국가에서 보건활동에 현신해 온 인물이라고 소개하며, 세계은행이 질병과 가난 퇴치에 중점적으로 일할것이라 했다.
아메리칸 드림이 어쩌고,
신흥국과의 교류가 어쩌고,
우리나라 국격이 어쩌고,
다 좋은 이야기 뿐이다.
근데 막상 Darthmouth 학생들은 어떻게 생각할까?
딱히 좋은 이야기만 있는 것 같지는 않다. 나쁜 코멘트들만 몇개 추려서 올려본다.
1. No wonder he has done nothing during the ongoing hazing allegations and only yesterday addressed the situation in an email to the community. His message said very little while attempting to defend his policies that consist of nothing more than creating ineffective committees. He’s done everything possible to deflect blame and put up a false front of progress. It’s a shame Dartmouth alumni as a whole don’t get to see the real Jim Kim and what little he has done to improve the Dartmouth experience at the ground level. One’s resume often does not tell the real story.
2. Great news for Dartmouth, bad news for the World Bank.
3. Kim was a risky choice to begin with and risky choices often don’t work out. It was quickly evident that Kim did not have the background or leadership abilities to guide an institution like Dartmouth and most of the colleges constituencies lquickly ost confidence in him.
4. Kim’s heart was never in it. Kim was the reluctant multi-millionaire. Here’s a job that you are completely unqualified for given to you by the guy who you will return the favor for by appointing him to be the head of Dartmouth-Hitchcock. “Who Want’s To Be A Millionaire,” is the Dartmouth game-show for wannabe Presidents. Kim said he wanted to pump out a thousand little Kims a year to run around and sacrifice themselves to change the world. He didn’t want them to do what they want to do, he wanted them to do what he wanted to do but has been a very successful failure at doing. Obama has also been a hugely successful failure and wants us all to fail with him, but with him on top taking our money and telling us all what to do.
5. I HATE YOU JIM KIM! However, you have taught me not to trust people like you, or the government, and I am sure that will be a useful lesson in the future.

우리가 사는 이 세상에서 한 결과에 대한 여론이 모두 객관적으로 만장일치 될수는 없겠죠?
저는 이번 결과에 대해 매우 긍정적 입니다. 김박사님이 한국인이라서가 아니라, 비금융인권이 세계은행 지도자가 되어 새로운 역사를 쓰게 되지 않을까라는 기대감이죠.
그리고, 개인적으로 김박사님이 부럽네요. 누군가가 나를 인정해준다는게 큰 기쁨이자 보람이죠 ^^

사실 전 별 생각 없었는데 트위터나 포탈에서 꽤 이슈가 되었길래 찾아봤습니다.
언론에서 말하는 것과 같이 한국인의 긍지나 세계적 위상같은 것보다 그 인물이 얼마나 긍정적 영향을 끼칠지 그리고 2-3년 뒤에 어떠한 영향을 끼쳤는지 재조명 될 때까지는 지켜봐야 할 것 같아요 :)
